At the time the Jeanette expedition one of the most unfortunate arctic enterprise on record almost sadder in its details than the undecided fate of the crews of the Erebus and Terror. The Jeanette left San Francisco on July 8, 1879 and, after touching at one or two points on the northern coast of America, past the gateway from the Pacific to the Arctic bound in the first instance to the pole ,and if that were unattainable then to do something that would immortalise the names of the Jeanette and his commander......Early in September Jeanette got locked in the ice N.E. Of Wrangel island . The unfortunate Jeanette never came for a whole year the ship kept drifting slowly and irregularly northwards. Always prepared for the worst De long before the water was a wash of the decks the boats sledges dogs instruments records and provisions were brought out on the ice more than the expedition were able to take with them on their perilous journey across the ice and ocean to the mouth of the Lena. Leaving new Siberian island In open boats parted.........the sad story continued. The two volumes have steel portrait, maps,and many illustrations on wood and stone.
