Cambridge: Printed for Corn. Crownfield, 1729. [Law] FIRST EDITION. Folio (39 x 28cm), pp.[34] 351 [3]. Printed with very generous margins, and the original Latin or Greek of the Laws discussed on the right-hand side of the commentary. Recently re-bound in brown speckled half calf, with raised bands, gilt titles to spine, and marbled paper over boards. Some faint ink notes to title page, and a much clearer library code to lower margin, as well as an ink number to verso. Library stamps to p.43 and p.346. Paper repair to p.183/84, and some restoration to top edge of title page. Some light occasional spotting and marking to leaves, but generally extremely clean and fresh. Presented in an attractive new binding. Very good. Including a chronology of authors mentioned, as well as a glossary and index, this is a thorough and wide-ranging 'extended essay' on the Draconian laws promulgated by a selection of ancient and early mediaeval rulers to punish various manifestations of lax living and thinking. Dedicated to the Lord Chancellor, the author declares himself quite satisfied with the current state of such laws in Britain and Ireland. ESTC: T112762. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
