First edition. Frontispiece portrait, 6 plates (4 folding), 4 folding maps, and 4 folding tables. xxxii, 427, (1); xiv, 434; xii, 410 pp. 3 vols. 8vo. Siebert's Copy - Uncut in the Original Wrappers. Crevecoeur, better known for his Letters from an American Farmer, stayed over 25 years in America, knew Washington well and observed his career from start to finish. Indeed, one of the attractions of the book is the gossip and personal experience which the author has brought to his work, as well as its excellent accounts of the Indians. The book is dedicated to Washington and the frontispiece is a portrait "Gravé d'après le Camée peint par Madame Bréhan à New York en 1789." The present is the first edition of this work, in large degree a continuation of his Letters from an American Farmer; no edition of the work was published in English until a translation in the 1960s. This fine uncut example in the original wrappers from the noted Americana library of Frank T. Siebert, sold his sale, Sotheby's New York, 21 May 1999, lot 216. Howes C 884; Sabin 17502; Monaghan 503; Field 388 (incorrectly calling for 10 instead of 11 maps and plates) Original stiff wrappers, uncut. One wrapper detached Frontispiece portrait, 6 plates (4 folding), 4 folding maps, and 4 folding tables. xxxii, 427, (1); xiv, 434; xii, 410 pp. 3 vols. 8vo [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
