Thomas Babington Macaulay / [Zachary Macaulay
[FINE BINDINGS] THE HISTORY OF ENGLAND FROM THE ACCESSION OF JAMES THE SECOND [5 VOLUMES] [with] CRITICAL AND HISTORICAL ESSAYS CONTRIBUTED TO THE EDINBURGH REVIEW [3 VOLUMES]
Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans / Longman, Green, Longmans, 1861. Full Leather. Two works -- Macaulay's History of England and his Critical and Historical Essays -- uniformly bound in eight volumes by Zaehnsdorf. The bindings are full tan calf with raised bands, elaborately gilt decorated spines with a floral motif in the center of each compartment; boards are triple ruled at the perimeters, with dentelle turn-ins and marbled endpapers. Volume one of The History of England has inserted a three-page holographic letter from Zachary Macaulay, Thomas Babington's father, to an unknown person. Zachary Macaulay, like his son, was an ardent anti-slavery proponent, and in the letter he is expressing concern that two anti-slavery Members of Parliament, Henry Brougham and Stephen Lushington, are in danger of losing their seats to proponents of slavery and writes about the influences of various religious denominations -- the High Church Anglicans, the Catholics, and the Methodists. A gorgeous set with an interesting letter from Zachary Macaulay.~. Near Fine binding.
