Folio Society, 2006. Both book and commentary volume appear UNREAD and are in FINE condition. No inscriptions, book plates, marks etc.. Solander box is VERY GOOD+ condition with some light shelf wear (see photos 7, 8, 9 & 10). The 3 standalone fine art prints are in FINE condition (See Photos). Folio Society Limited Edition - THE SURINAM ALBUM This volume includes the 3 standalone limited (1000 each) fine art prints which were included when it was originally purchased from the Folio Society. As these prints were initially designed to be mounted and frame it is unusual to have them still with the book. They are missing more often than not. Maria Sibylla Merian was one of the 17th and 18th centenaries' great painters of plants and animals, standing alongside artists like Redouté, Ehret and Bauer. Many books on botanical art reproduce images from the Metamorphois Insectorum Surinamensium , a selection of 60 engravings she published in 1705. There are significant collections of Merian's work in the Academy of Sciences in St Petersburg and The Royal Collection, Windsor, but the finest and largest collection of her Surinam work is kept in the British Museum, which contains 91 watercolours, 31 of which were never engraved and so were not included in the Metamorphois. These 91 paintings which form the Surinam Album were part of Sir Hans Sloane's founding bequest to the museum. Carefully preserved in the British Museum, the 91 watercolours have never faded and the colours glow with all the intensity Merian must have felt as she first gazed on the lush splendour of the tropics.
