CHARLES DICKENS First Edition BLEAK HOUSE 1853 About the Book Dickens' novel about the legal case, Jarndyce vs Jarndyce, an endless inheritance dispute that has dragged on for generations. The case provides a backdrop to the sad fate of the all the characters linked to the case, with the only beneficiaries being the lawyers. As with many of Dickens' novels, it was first published in monthly installments then issued as a book. The book has been bound without half title page from parts and has all of the first issue parts outlined in Smith including the 10 dark plates, plates 75 and 88 have been transposed. Bleak House by Charles Dickens UK First Edition, published in 1853 by Bradbury & Evans Hardback three quarter leather binding, raised bands and gilt lettering to spine. 625 printed pages, no dust jacket. The book is illustrated by H.K. Browne (aka "Phiz") 38 plates in the text and a 2 plate frontispiece, making, 40 plates in total. Phiz developed a new type of illustration known as "dark plate" to reflect the somber mood in parts Dickens work, we have photographed some of these plates above. Condition The book is in good condition. There is a chip to the top of the back cover near the leather spine where some of the marbled paper has come away. There is slight wear to the leather to the corners. The plates have brown marks or spots common to of plates of this age. There is a mark on the frontispiece.
