Yeats, William Butler
Autograph letter signed ("WB Yeats"), to a Major de Bleis(?), regarding "army trouble"
82 Merrion Square, Dublin, 1923. 1 page. 12mo. Senator Yeats. A response from Yeats to an officer in the Irish army, dating from his years as Senator in the Irish Free State: "I thank you for your kind letter of Dec 7. I hope all that you wish will come true for Ireland, I think this will when this army trouble is over." The trouble likely refers to the mutiny and subsequent dismissal of 60 IRA officers in November 1923, who were contesting government efforts to demobilize. That incident proved prelude to the Irish Army Mutiny of March 1924, during which Yeats served as "principal transmitter of political secrets among the Independents" (Fitzpatrick, "Yeats in the Senate," Studia Hibernica, No. 12 (1972), p 10). 82 Merrion Square was Yeats' home while he served in the senate, from 1922-1928. Old folds, remnant of mounts on verso
