A Hieroglyphic Geography of the United States: Part I, Containing the States of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York. Designed and Drawn by Anna A. Heermans. Engraved by Charlotte B. Cogswell. Part I (likely all issued). Published 1875, New York by E.P. Dutton and Company. 23 pages. Text in English. Illustrated (complete) with seven cartographic images which are essentially rebus maps. Of particular note for the female artist and engraver, very unusual features in American cartography during the 19th century. Given to a woman for Christmas in 1885 (inscription on front blank fly leaf). Publisher's cloth binding embossed in blind rules with corner devices, large central decorative gilt cover title. Binding remains clean, tight, and sound, some light rubbing and surface soiling, couple small holes to cloth along front joint, spine ends slightly worn. Interior mostly clean, minor scattered edge splits or small soiling, contents display a pleasing age patina. Any age flaws are easy to overlook or forgive. 19th century school geography, notable for having both a female author and a female engraver. Book measures: 12" H X 10" W. [V2334].
