This is a large book measuring 12" x 9". The gilt lettering and illustration to the front cover and spine is bright and unrubbed. There is a small bookplate in the rear and no signatures or markings of any other kind. There is some yellowing to the endpapers, as is normal for this book. This book contains all 12 original illustrations by Alastair. The pages are clean and free of any foxing. This is a limited edition of only 1000 copies. A rare find complete with many beautiful illustrations. Synopsis The Sphinx is a poem by Oscar Wilde about sensual beauty of the Sphinx and the mysterious grandeur of the ancient world she represents. ---------- About the Illustrator---------- Alastair (Baron Hans Henning Voigt) was an artist, composer, dancer, mime, poet, singer and translator. Mysterious, flamboyant, enigmatic and attractive to many people he was born of German nobility in 1887 in Karlsruhe. In his youth he joined the circus and learned mime. Shortly after leaving school he studied philosophy at Marburg University where he would meet the writer Boris Pasternak.
