There is mild foxing to the title pages of each book. There is a book plate of Michael Beverley and inscriptions to each book in addition to the authors signature. The English Flora by Sir J E Smith -Signed First Edition- Founder Linnaen Society About the Book and Author The English Flora by Sir James Edward Smith is a set of four books all first editions published between 1824 and 1828 (the year of his death), be the last and most important work of Sir James Edward Smith. Sir James Edward Smith was most probable the most influential botanist of his time being Member of the Academies of Stockholm, Upsal, Turin, Lisbon, Philadelphia, New York etc. He is most famous for founding and being the first president of the Linnaean Society a leaned society based in London to this day and is dedicated to the study and dissemination of information related to natural history, evolution and taxonomy. The most notable event to take place at the society was the first public exposition of the Theory of Evolution on 1st July 1858 by the presentation of papers by Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace. Volume 1 and 3 are signed to "Tho Brightwell Esq from his obliged & faithful friend the Author".
