In-4 (20.5 x 25.5 cm), bound in full calf of the time, back with 5 nerves, title piece, marbled slices. First edition of the translation by Pierre Coste of this treatise by John Locke (here in French "Jean Locke"). John Locke was one of the first great thinkers of "English empiricist materialism" (current which extends from the end of the 17th century to the 18th century). His philosophy, fundamentally empiricist, is expressed through the precise study of sensations, which forms the fundamental base of his thought. This treatise, the " Essai philosophique concernant l'entendement humain ", is the first and cornerstone. Its publication gave rise to many reactions, the most famous being that of Leibniz, who thought he should take a stand, by publishing a "New Essay on Human Understanding", which comments and tries to refute, chapter by chapter , John Locke's theses. Locke's essay, introduced in France at the beginning of the 18th century thanks to Pierre Coste, who delivers a translation here based on the fourth English edition (revised, corrected and augmented by Locke), played a fundamental role in the discovery of English empiricism by the philosophers of the Enlightenment.
