DIBDIN, Rev. Thomas Frognall (1776-1847)
A Bibliographical Antiquarian and Picturesque Tour in the Northern Counties of England and in Scotland
London: Printed for the author by C. Richards, 1838. [Literary Topography] FIRST EDITION. Complete in two volumes. Octavo (25 x 16cm), pp.[2] xxvi; 436; xxx [4]; pp.[2] iv; 437-1090 [2]. With 42 engraved plates, including a frontispiece to each volume, as well as numerous in-text engravings. Contemporary green full morocco with raised bands, gilt titles and decoration to spines, all edges gilt, and marbled endpapers. Plain bookplates of Fred F. Thompson to front pastedown of each volume. Paper toned to margins, and unusually brittle for the period, with a few minor chips and tears. Heavy spotting to Alnwick Castle plate and facing leaf, otherwise a crisp, clean copy with only very minimal spotting and browning to plates. A little rubbing and chipping to board edges, with a recent repair to head cap of volume II, and the upper joint of volume I just starting. Spines sunned to brown. Very good. Dibdin begins by descrying the death of 'Book-Chivalry' and the perversity of book collecting fashions, before cracking on with his lengthy report on a 1700 mile trip around the northern half of Great Britain, paying particular note, of course, to interesting libraries and literary figures along the way. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
Bookseller: Adrian Harrington Ltd, PBFA, ABA, ILAB [Royal Tunbridge Wells, KENT, United Kingdom]
