Arthur Conan Doyle
The Gas War of 1940 'Miles' 1931 UK 1st d/w fine Future war novel rare
John Murray. Condition: Very Good. See description and photos. The Gas War of 1940 by 'Miles' Eric Partridge at the Scholartis Press 1931 UK 1st NF/NF Blue cloth, no inscriptions, publication details of the book are given on page 8 in a virtually fine pictorial jacket in black on green signed with the initial 'K'; correctly priced on front flap at 7/6 (Spectrum of Fantasy p.157) Born Stephen Henry Critten, the author used a number of pseudonyms eventually changing his name to one of them, Stephen Southwold. He most often wrote as Neil Bell and also wrote as Miles, Stephen Green, S. H. Lambert, and Paul Martens. His first sf novel, The Seventh Bowl (1930) as by Miles, begins the short Gas War sequence; it is a bitter future history in which the deployment of a technology to achieve immortality by corrupt politicians sets in train a chain of events leading to the Gas War of 1940 and to the World State which follows; the invention of an immortality drug corrupts government leaders, who use eugenics to enforce their rule; but the development of a new power source causes the end of the world The second volume of the sequence is The Gas War of 1940 and gives a more detailed account of the Gas War in terms prophetic of WW2 except for its assumption that poison will be used, and that it will cause the end of civilization. A difficult book without a wrapper; a copy in such an exceptional jacket is genuinely scarce and desirable. [Attributes: In Dust Jacket]
