Edinburgh: Robert Caddell, 1830. Presented is a forty-eight volume set of Waverley Novels in a very red part leather hardcover series, published in the years 1830 through 1834. Described in Wikipedia as the "Magnum Opus", this very set is an early printing of the 'new' edition of Waverley novels, first released in 1814, that includes, for the very first time, a general preface and introductory notes by the author, Sir Walter Scott, whose name was not revealed to the public until 1827*. Imagine the wealth this set represented on one's bookshelves at that time! Such a wealth of entertainment and education it provided its owners back when horse-drawn wagons delivered the only news of the day! Dates of Publication:Twelve volumes of this set were printed each year from 1830 through 1834 by Robert Caddell, Edinburgh, and Whittaker & Co., London. Dimensions and Construction:These 48 books are 6 3/4 inches by 4 1/2 inches in size and have part leather, five-ribbed spines, gilded boards and page tops (only) and marbled face pages. Volumes contain one finely engraved frontispiece illustration and one title page illustration. Refer to the photos for examples of both from volume I, "Waverley". Markings:The first blank page has a stamp at the bottom outer corner which reads, "Layntun, Binder, Bath, Eng", and at the top, another stamp which reads, "C. E. Lauriat Co., Boston", referring to the retailer, Charles E. Lauriat Company booksellers.
