Rare Book of Common Prayer, King James Bible and Psalter c1714, London Edition
1662. "THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER, and administration of the sacraments, and other rites and ceremonies of the church, according to the use of the Church of England" A book with provenance as it belonged to William Hickes/Thomas Hickes of Suffolk This is a print of the 1662 edition which is still in use today as the official prayer book of the Church of England. 'It contained Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, the Litany, and Holy Communion and also the occasional services in full: the orders for Baptism, Confirmation, Marriage, "prayers to be said with the sick", and a funeral service. It also set out in full the "propers" (that is the parts of the service which varied week by week or, at times, daily throughout the Church's Year): the introits, collects, and epistle and gospel readings for the Sunday service of Holy Communion. Old Testament and New Testament readings for daily prayer were specified in tabular format as were the Psalms; and canticles, mostly biblical, that were provided to be said or sung between the readings.' These dated sections have been bound together within a leather cover carrying the initials of the Hicks / Hickes family (from Suffolk, England): The St James Bible, Old and New testaments London Edition, printed 1711 Psalter or Psalms of David, pointed as they are to be sung or said in churches. Printed 1702 FAMILY PROVENANCE This collection of texts was bound together and given in 1714 to William Hicks of Semer in Suffolk, by his 'godmother Elizabeth'.
