1915. [EDUCATION - FRÖBEL METHOD] GARRETSON, Edith. Archive of Twelve Hand-Made Fröbel Sample Books with Two Instructional Notebooks. Flatbush / New York, 1915. Fourteen volumes as described below: 1. Twelve uniform oblong quarto volumes (21.5x28.5cm.); stabbed sewn card self-wrappers, upper covers lettered in neat manuscript. One volume ("Sewing") a bit discolored and slightly worn, all others in Near Fine to Fine condition. 2. "Memorandum" notebook; 12mo (15.5cm.); brown stitched card wrappers, manuscript ownership inscription of Edith Garretson to upper cover (Flatbush, New York / Pratt Institute); filled to completion (ca. 40pp.); a bit worn, a few leaves chipped or torn, else Good and sound. 3. "Crochetting" notebook; 12mo (15cm.); black cloth tape-backed card wrappers, red and white upper cover label accomplished in manuscript; filled approx. 50% to completion, including three mounted pencil illus. Light wear and soil to textblock, else Very Good or better. Extraordinary collection of materials produced by Edith Garretson, a student at the Pratt Institute's School of Kindergarten Training, at the time headed by Alice E. Fitts. The collection includes Garretson's teaching journal, in which she recorded the educational toys ("gifts") and activities ("occupations") she and her class had used and enjoyed each day (for example, a gift could include circular pieces of colored paper, clay, or a bird house, while the occupations ranged from soap bubbles to designing borders for table cloths, from sewing to drawing with colored crayons and making bird nests).
