Charlotte Brontë
Shirley, Charlotte Bronte ~ TRUE 1850 First US Edition 1st/1st Harper & Brothers
Harper and Brothers, 1850. If men could see us as we really are, they would be a little amazed; but the cleverest, the acutest men are often under an illusion about women: they do not read them in a true light: they misapprehend them, both for good and evil: their good woman is a queer thing, half doll, half angel; their bad woman almost always a fiend. Here we offer the true first edition, first printing of Charlotte Bronte's second novel, Shirley, a Tale, published under the pseudonym, "Currer Bell," by Bronte's original US publisher, Harper & Brothers, New York, in 1850, on the heels of her great success with Jane Eyre and just after the death of Charlotte's two siblings, Emily and Anne. The popularity of the novel is attributed as the reason for the name Shirley to have become a female name when before this period it was almost exclusively a male name. Book is very well preserved with worn boards; intact, inscribed endpapers with period bookplate; and period-inscribed title page (please see pics.) Binding is very tight and square with pliable, quality pulp; foxed text is very clean, bright, and crisp. Measures approximately 7.75 x 5.5-inches. 572 pages, plus 2 pages of ads. This scarce first Bronte classic will make a splendid centerpiece to your collection or a very special gift. Please click HERE to see the other Bronte classics we offer!
