Anatomy, Descriptive and Surgical 1862 Second American Used in Civil War Gray's Description: Gray, Henry. Anatomy, Descriptive and Surgical. Philadelphia: Blanchard and Lea, 1862. Small 4to, 816pp, full beige leather binding, illustrated throughout. Second American edition. This copy used during the Civil War, as it is inscribed "Field Hospital No. 1" in ink on the front pastedown, the binding is gilt stamped "U.S.A. Hospital Dep't" to lower spine, and the volume is also inscribed by George G. Tarbell on the front endpaper, dated 1863; Tarbell is listed as assistant surgeon with the 3rd Massachusetts Regiment, and we went on to become a prominent Boston physician. This copy bears the 19th century bookplate of the Boston Public Library to the front pastedown, along with the stamp "Dupl. Room" to verso of title page; it is also inscribed to verso of title page by Dr. W.W. Channing in 1901 Daniel Mark in 1966. Wear, rubbing and scuffing to covers, lacking spine label, minor chipping to margins of first few leaves, including title page, toning to pages, chipping to leather at head of spine and one corner, with some loss.
