Charles Robert Ashbee (17 May 1863 - 23 May 1942) was an English designer and entrepreneur who was a prime mover of the Arts and Crafts movement that took its craft ethic from the works of John Ruskin and its co-operative structure from the socialism of William Morris. Essex House Press carried on the craft printing of the Kelmscott Press, utilizing all its equipment, but designing new type, including the Caslon font used throughout this title. C. R. Ashbee selected for his press a variety of classic genres in which to apply the printer's craft. Puritan classics by the press include, John Bunyan's Pilgrims Progress, "A journal of the life of John Woolman in service of the gospel", and the present volume by William Penn.
