One of the most important 18th-century fencing manuals and a key work in the development of modern fencing. L'ART DES ARMES was a direct attack on the orthodoxy of the Académie d'armes de Paris. "Son ouvrage doit d'être classé parmi ceux qui ont rendu le plus de services à la cause de notre art et de son enseignement" (Vigeant). A second volume, containing an additional 12 plates and a response to critics allied with the Académie, was published in 1767.
