London: Curwen Press, 1936. The old series, issued without glassine wrappers. Rare with the original portfolio which has a small manuscript number written at the top, the backstrip of which is faded. Each of the three periodicals is in prestine condition. not the slightest indication of inner joint strain or wear to the spines. It seems perfectly possible that the three issues: 4, 5 & 6 have never been read. Clean crisp state, with the sought after plates in envious condition. Oliver Simon explains: Following bomb damage to the premises of the Curwen Press, the last number of the first series was printed under a bright blue sky, in edition of 550 copies. It is difficult to overstate the importance of Signature.The consideration of typographical developments within the pages of Signature during the nineteen thirties and onward, has been added to in recent years by the reassessment of artists and printmakers such as Freedman, Nash, Bawden, Ardizzone, Sutherland and Piper. This periodical covers the work of around fifty artists with original lithographs, etchings and engravings a feature. There are also many other inserts such as book jacket designs and lithographic adverts.
