This map is Chatelain's reduced version of N. De Fer's very important four-sheet map of 1718. It is one of the most informative map of French possessions in North America in the early 18th century. The map has an Inset plan and view of Quebec which is enclosed in an extremely decorative cartouche. At the top left of the map is large scale map of the Mississippi Delta and Mobile Bay. The Louisiana and Mississippi valley areas were based on De l'Isle's manuscript map of 1701. The geography of New England and Eastern Canada originates with Franquelin. The map is filled with wildlife, scenes and views of Indians hunting and in their villages, and the oceans are embellished with many ships, canoes and sea monsters.
