Very rare copy in A superb and rare binding with the Great Royal Arms (Louis XIV) VALERIUS MAXIMUS 1st century AD Valère Maxime or Valerius Maximus is a Roman historian and moralist of the 1st century AD. AD, contemporary of the Roman emperor Tiberius. Biography His life is very little known. Valère Maxime could be considered as a descendant of the Valeria people by his father and of Fabius Maximus by his mother. He served in Asia under Sextus Pompeius, consul in 14 and was admitted to the court of the Emperor Tiberius. He writes between 24 and 31 his work Memorable Facts The Memorable Facts and Facts (Facta et dicta memorabilia) Valère Maxime composes between 24 and 31, the Facts and So-called Memorable, sometimes entitled Paroles Mémorables, a collection of anecdotes intended to feed the reflection and the speech of speakers and philosophers. In particular, he drew Roman examples of civil wars from the repertoire of a literature that has disappeared today, that of the accounts of proscription, which makes his writings precious. His point of view on the civil war is nevertheless nuanced, and moral: this can be explained on the one hand by the patronage of a descendant of Pompey and the pressure which could be exerted on the historians by Tiberius (whose subject on civil wars, again delicate to approach) and, on the other hand, on the contemporary example of Aulus Cremutius Cordus who, for having praised the assassins of César Brutus and Cassius, was ordered suicide in 25.
