1873. Condition: Very good. [Canal du Midi - RIQUET]. Original handwritten genealogical table established for the sharing of shares in the Canal du Midi between the members of the Family of the Counts and Marquis RIQUET de CARAMAN. 1873. Sheets assembled on canvas (297 x 60 cm unfolded) and folded in 28 parts. GOOD CONDITION VISIBLE IN THE PHOTOS Originally from Languedoc (Béziers), the Riquet de Caraman family was ennobled by letters in relief in 1666, thanks to Pierre-Paul Riquet, a wealthy bourgeois from Béziers (1609-1680), who conceived and executed the project of the "Royal Canal of Languedoc "(called under the Revolution" Canal du Midi "). After a career in salt and finance, he embarked on the great project of building a canal between Toulouse and the Mediterranean. Contrary to the attempts of its predecessors, Pierre-Paul Riquet's project succeeded in solving the problem of the canal's water supply by taking up Thomas de Scorbiac's project and drawing on his knowledge of the surrounding Black Mountain. Riquet predicted the culmination of the canal at the point where the threshold of Naurouze divides, on either side of which the rivers flow either towards the Atlantic Ocean or towards the Mediterranean Sea. He proposed his project to Colbert in 1662, arguing for an economic development of Languedoc through the wheat trade as well as a political interest (avoiding the king's galleys to go through Gibraltar).
