MEMOIRE sur la Peine de Mort. 1830
96551 MEMOIRE sur la Peine de Mort. 1830 MEMOIRE sur la Peine de Mort. s.l.n.d. (c.1830). Folio MANUSCRIPT. 7 leaves. Modern-style ancient boards. Original manuscript of a vibrant plea for abolition of the death penalty, probably written to be read before the Chambre des Députés where the issue was debated several times along the course of the 19th century. Among the most famous abolitionists of the time were Victor Hugo and Lamartine. We have not been able to identify the author of this first draft, which contains numerous crossings-out and corrections. The author refutes the supporters' arguments in favor of maintaining death penalty and calls on France to set an example to the rest Europe, and to pronounce its abolition.
