Le caustique auteur de l'Apologie pour Hérodote étoit bien homme à produire l'outrageux pamphlet, dont, au reste, la grave et sévère histoire a confirmé, sinon approuvé, presque toutes les rudes et souvent brutales affirmations" (Renouard, 143).
