Galileo Galilei: Systema cosmicum, 1664 & Rohault: Tractatus physicus, 1674
1663. For sale is here: Book with two early editions of important works in the history of physics. The book contains: 1) Galileo Galilei: Systema cosmicum, in quo quatuor dialogis, de duobus maximis mundi systematibus, Ptolemaico & Copernicano utrisuque rationibus philosophicis ac naturalibus indefinite propositis, disseritur. Ex Italica lingua Latine conversum. London: Thomas Dicas. Published in 1663. [10], 704, [12] pages. This copy lacks the engraved frontispiece, flyleaf with damages. Pages slightly browned and partly foxed, but overall a fine copy. This is the third edition of the Latin version of "Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems" by Galilei. It was first published in 1632 in Italian. This Latin version was first published in 1635, a second edition in 1641 and the third one in 1663. The content of the book - that the heliocentric Copernican system has better arguments to be true than the Ptolemaic system - brought Galilei to the Inqusition and as a result he was set under house arrest for the rest of his life. 2) Jacques Rohault: Tractatus physicus. Gallice emissus et recens latinitate donatus per Th. Bonetum. Geneva: Johannes Hermann Widerhold. Published in 1674. [23], 762, [44]. In the same fine condition like the Galilei. This is the first edition of the Latin version. Jacques Roha … [Click Below for Full Description]
