Bayntun-Riviere Bath binding in red leather with gilt ruling and lettering, raised bands and dentelles; original cloth binding mounted to pages following Chatto & Windus ads at rear bound in. Gilt edges. Decorative endpapers. Chatto & Windus ad for works of Twain opposite half-title. Frontispiece "Titan's Moses" with tissue guard and publisher's device on title page. Illustrated by W. Fr. Brown, True Williams, B. Day and other artists - with also three or four pictures made by the author of this book without outside help; in all three hundred and fourteen illustrations. Chatto & Windus first one volume edition in August 1880. Travel literature covering central and southern Europe in a humorous mixture of autobiographical and fictional events. The books contains six appendices, essays on various subjects: the porter in European hotels, a description of the Heidelberg Castle, an essay on College Prisons in Germany, a humorous essay on the German language, a short story entitled "The Legends of the Castle," and a satire on German newspapers. Light wear to bound in original front cover with some water staining to back cover. Bayntun binding and interior in fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
