The Royal Gallery of Art, 1862, 144 fine Victorian engravings, first edition
London: Virtue, 1862. Title: The Royal Gallery of Art, Ancient and Modern: Engraving from the Private Collection of Pictures of Her Majesty the Queen and His Late Royal Highness The Prince Consort etc. Two Volumes complete. Publication: Virtue & Co, no date, c1862 A rare complete set of these engravings, commissioned and published by Virtue & Co between 1855 and 1861: the title page of this set at least is 1862 since it alludes to the Prince Consort's death in December 1861. Virtue & Co established themselves as specialists in fine engravings of great masters on the back of this series. 72 engravings in each Volume, each with tissue guard and two pages of letterpress, names of painter and engraver shown below plate. Painters from Rubens to Sir David Wilkie. 10.5 x 13.5 inches, in original red cloth with gilt decoration and titles, all edges gilt, expertly recased and refurbished. The spines are stained and faded, the engraved title page to Volume 1 is slightly stained, there is a neat repair to the edge of Volume 2 contents list, otherwise the prints and text are in excellent condition, some offsetting onto tissue guards. All of the prints are superb, some of the engraving brilliant. It is not known how many copies of this complete set were printed or how many of the prints overall, but complete sets appear to be very scarce.
