Pages 43-77 contain Lamb's remarkable essay 'On Christ's Hospital, and The Character of The Christ's Hospital Boys.' Wilson concludes his 'History' by stating: 'It was the intention of the writer of this little work to have closed it by attempting a general character of the boys upon the establishment, when he accidentally met with the following account of the Hospital and the Character of the Boys...It was written by a gentleman well known in the literary world, who had himself passed seven years in the Hospital, and was communicated in 1813 to the Editor of the Gentleman's Magazine.' First edition (first printing). Disbound. Very good in wrappers (paperback). Illustrated frontispiece engraving of the hospital. Hand-colored figure on title page. Scattered foxing.
