Original green fine-diaper cloth, covers blocked in blind, spine with elaborate design in blind, titles to spine gilt, yellow endpapers. With 40 engraved plates, including frontispiece and vignette title. Ownership signature in ink to front pastedown, pencil to front free endpaper, bookplate to front pastedown. Spine faded to brown, minor wear to tips, split to foot of rear joint though still sound, odd spot of foxing to text, some spotting and oxidisation of plates. A very good copy. First edition, bound from the original monthly parts as issued from October 1846 to April 1848, in the publisher's primary cloth binding, which was made available to owners of the parts upon the novel's completion, matching the binding of the book form edition. Smith I, 8. The primary binding was identified by Kremers, correcting Smith: see Lars Kremers, "A Comparative Bibliography of the Sheets and Publishers' Cloth Cases of the Demy Octavo Works of Charles Dickens, 1837-1872", 2013, pp. 196-211.
