Book of Common Prayer. Published By D. B. [Daniel Berkeley] Updike, Merrymount Press
The Book of Common Prayer; and Administration of the Sacraments and Other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church According to the Use of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America. Together with the Psalter or Psalms of David
The Merrymount Press for the Commission, Boston. Boston: The Merrymount Press for the Commission, 1928. Title page dated 1828 but not actually published until 1830, one of 500 copies printed. A monumental work in American printing and typography, with its beauty derived from the balance of red and black text against the white space of the luxuriously thick handmade paper. The cost of production was underwritten by J. P. Morgan., Jr. Full blindstamped oxblood pigskin, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed, an impressive 13.75 inches tall and three inches thick. Very good condition with some use-related rubbing to the extremities, mainly the lower edge, upper left of front cover slightly lighter than the rest of the book, possibly due to variation in the leather, good joints and hinges, text block firm and shows little evidence of use, pages very clean with a few slightly yellowed areas in margins, very small darkened area in the middle of the front free endpaper from removal of a small label, no names or other markings. Includes a printed letter from Lucien Moore Robinson, Custodian of the Book of Common Prayer, transmitting the book to a Diocese, with the name of the Diocese and Bishop handwritten on the letter. While this book is known for binding problems, specifically with the front joint, this example shows no such issues and has been well cared-for over the years. Limited Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. Folio - 12" - 15" Tall. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
