Vita Sackville-West
SACKVILLE-WEST, Vita. Challenge. Rare and Important Feminist Novel.
NY: Doran, 1923. SACKVILLE-WEST, Vita. Challenge. Rare Feminist Novel. 8vo lime green cloth stamped in orange. NY: George H. Doran & Company, 1923. Correct First Edition, first issue binding; 297pp. Printed in Great Britain, with a cancel title page as called for by the bibliographer. Cross A9a. The author's rarest and most important work. Copies in dust jacket are exceedingly rare, and the bibliographer had not seen one. "Challenge" was banned in the UK until 1974. British Sheets were immediately bound up with the Doran title page, and book was issued in the US shortly after publication. The novel is based on Sackville-West's love affair with writer & socialite, Violet Trufusis. This copy is internally fine, but the binding is marred by an early ink splash on the spine and back cover.
