(A la fin:) Lyon, Ioannis Remy, 1522, XXIII Octobre. 4to. 4 leaves. 100 numbered leaves. Full calf, blindstamped boards (summarily rebacked and restored). Very rare Lyon edition of the Satires of Persius, given with his notes by the great Flemish humanist and printer Josse Badius (1462-1535).After being a Professor of Greek in Lyon, Badius founded a printing workshop in Paris and he published numerous valuable editions of Latin classics, often with his own comments. The preface of the present edition is dated from Lyon, September 6 of 1522 but it is in fact a reprint of the edition which Badius had published in 1499 in Lyon (Nicolas Wolf). The trickery aimed probably at giving a touch of novelty to this edition and make it more attractive.Gothic type, title page in black and red inks, in a very nice architectural frame. Numerous contemporary manuscript annotations. The guard leaves bear heavy handwriting of another hand, with several references to a contemporary owner named 'François Alcoffe".Foxing, a few stains. Not in Adams. About Badius's preface, see Renouard, III, pp.14-147.
