1883. Full leather, spine labels, First American Edition, 1st state (BAL3411). See description and photos. LIFE ON THE MISSISSIPPI By Samuel Clemens, published by James R Osgood and Company, Boston, 1883. (1)-624. Illustrated, measures 8-3/4" x 5 3/4", bound in full leather with label spines. First U.S. edition, first state. A limited number of the first state was issued by subscription only. On page 441, there is a depiction of Twain in flames that was removed from later printings. On page 443, the caption reads, "The St. Louis Hotel." These are the points for a first edition, first state as per BAL 3411. The book is in good attractive condition though front gutter of front cover is starting to split. Marbled endpapers. Previous owner's name is present in faded ink on 2nd free standing front endpaper. Also, note in the photos that the edge of the first 10-20 pages is somewhat ragged. Please see photos. [Attributes: First Edition]
