99379 LE ROYER (Jacques). Causae Fluxus et Refluxus Maris, Ventorum, et Febris in 1660 LE ROYER (Jacques). Causae Fluxus et Refluxus Maris, Ventorum, et Febris intermittentis. Parisiis, apud Joannem de la Caille, 1660. 16mo. 102 pages. 2 leaves. Full soft vellum. First latin Edition, simultaneously published in French by the same printer.Born in 1625 in Mortain (Manche, north-west of France), Jacques Le Royer, lord of the Blinière, was a Norman lawyer who was also passionate about astrology and occult. In this curious and very rare book, he attributes tidal movement to the sole reflections of sunlight on the side of the moon and on that of planets which according to him do not exert astrological influence as such. The author gave himself the title of: "Le Messager du Mouvement perpétuel et hydraulique, de la Quadrature du Cercle de la mesure de la Diagonale, par le costé du Quarré, des Longitudes, des Causes du Flux et du Reflux de la Mer, des Vents et de la fièvre intermittente".Precious copy bearing an "ex-dono" autograph of Henri-Louis Barrin of Galissonière (died in 1722), member of a famous family of sailors. The recipient's name is unspecified, but it could be that of the first illustrious sailor of the family, Henri-Louis' older brother, the future Admiral Rolland Barrin of Galissonière. In 1662 (two years after the publication of this volume), Rolland joined the company of the Brest coast guards: the book may have been given to him on this occasion.Lovely copy in its original soft vellum.
