1723 Two Volume Holy Bible Set With Exquisite Bindings, Large Maps & Numerous Engravings
John Baskett, Oxford. An astounding complete set of two illustrated volumes of the Holy Bible from 1723 adorned with six large folding maps and 200 ‘histories’ (engravings), bound together with a Book of Common Prayer (1719), the Apocrypha, and a Whole Booke of Psalms (1723). All complete in every aspect! Bound in two matching volumes. Full gilt decorated contemporary red calf bindings with ornate “JHS” (Christogram - First three Greek letters for ‘Jesus’) central lozenge to the boards. Finely re-backed with original gilt decorated spine leather expertly re-laid. Restoration work carried out by one of the UK’s leading leather bookbinders. Provenance: Purchased from the family of the late Archdeacon of Manchester, Willoughby Charles Allen. A presentation copy from him to his son Frederick Willoughby Allen in 1945. Front end papers contained a documented family tree from Willoughby Charles Allen [Born 1867] through the last entry in 1978. Willoughby Charles Allen [1867-1953] Archdeacon of Manchester 1909-1916 & Archdeacon of Blackburn 1916-1920. Multiple title pages to the Old Testament (“Sacred Geography in six maps” – in red and black, “The Historical Part of the Holy Bible .” and the General Title – Oxford, John Baskett, 1723), the New Testament, The Book of Common Prayer (1719) and the Psalter (1723).
