Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 3rd Earl of Shaftesbury (1671-1713
CHARACTERISTICKS OF MEN, MANNERS, OPINIONS, TIMES. The Fifth Edition
Printed by John Baskerville, 1773. Hardcover. Shaftesbury is of importance for promoting the concept of the "Man of Taste". By his writing, especially the present work, "he allied reason and virtue and linked aesthetics with the moral sense: 'what is beautiful is harmonious and proportionable; what is harmonious and proportionable is true; and what is at once both beautiful and true is of consequence agreeable and good.' His Neoplatonic idea of Beautiful Nature gave the philosophical basis to the mid-18th century idealized landscape gardens. He commended rocks, caverns, cascades, and grottoes, and anticipated Addison and Pope in preferring the wilderness in Nature to 'the mockery of princely gardens.'" (Oxford Companion to Gardens). This edition was among the final works produced by the eminent English printed and type designer John Baskerville (1707-1775). Frontispiece, with title page engravings, engraved vignette and headpieces by Simon Gribeli. Tall octavo, three volumes. The period calf bindings have been recased with new morocco spines, gilt stamping, and endpapers. The boards are rather edgeworn and showing a bit in places, moreso at the lower corner of the rear board of the first volume; else very good. Very good.
