L. Curmer, éditeur, 47, rue Richelieu, au premier, 1864. Magnificent copy of this edition of bibliophiles, through which the publisher and printer Léon Curmer (1801-1870) became known. This work is distinguished above all by the extraordinary quality of the reproductions in view of the technical qualities of the time, but also by the precision and accuracy of the comments and descriptions that accompany it. The first 2 volumes include 401 color chromolithographs from Livres of hours and manuscripts, with particular attention to the rendering of miniatures, borders and other decorations. The volume of appendix to the Gospels contains the list of subscribers, the first of which is Napoléon III himself. This volume also contains thanksgiving illustrated with 80 original photographs after old copperplate engravings; these illustrations make it one of the first Livres illustrated by photography; the notices, the ornamentation of the appendix, the classification of the various schools of painting of the manuscripts. Pierre Larousse will say in his dictionary: "M. Curmer has undertaken the color reproduction of old manuscripts. He succeeded beyond all hope. He has searched and explored all the libraries on the continent and in England, there is not a major manuscript which is not represented in his editions of the Sunday Gospels. This last work especially, by the great importance of the reproductions, their variety, their authenticity, will remain as one of the most beautiful Livres that one has ever tried to carry out ".
