Walt Whitman
Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman ~3rd Edition from First 1860 Plates~Pls See Desc
1860. Do anything, but let it produce joy. Here we offer Walt Whitman's classic ever-self-revised poetry collection, Leaves of Grass. These are pirated editions often sold on eBay as originals, so let me explain: This third edition was originally published by Thayer and Eldridge, Boston, in 1861. In 1879, when the edition was discontinued, the publisher sold the original printing plates at auction to Richard Worthington, who promptly placed the edition back into production without Whitman's approval. And Worthington pirated many thousands of these before the plates were able to be recovered after Whitman's death. So, if you see one of these selling, and if the copyright page does not feature the name of printer "George C Rand & Avery", then you are definitely looking at a Worthington pirated edition, deserving a date between 1880 and 1893. This particular Worthington edition bears an 1888 inscription, so we can estimate 1880-88. It is a particularly attractive edition featuring beveled boards and a striking tissue-protected frontispiece. Sunned spine and worn boards, especially at the head and foot of the spine (please see pics.) Period-inscribed front endpages are splitting at gutter, though hinges are very secure. Fingerprints on title page. Frontis tissue is original. Binding is very tight and square; text is very clean, bright, and crisp. 456 pages; measures approximately 7.75 x 5.25-inches. This early classic will make a cherished addition to your collection or a very special gift. ** Have you seen all the amazing first and rare editions of iconic books we offer?
