1920. Original painting by the great modernist poet. e e cummings original painting. Oil on board, 335mm x 265mm. Original painting by the American poet, painter, essayist, author, and playwright. In addition to around 2,900 poems, two autobiographical novels, four plays, and several essays, Cummings left a considerable artistic legacy - what became known as his 'painterly estate.' This is a wonderful example titled on verso in Cummings's hand, "View from my window, Hotel de la Havane 42 rue Staint Andre des Arts." In his book Expatriate Paris: A Cultural and Literary Guide to Paris of the 1920s: Arlen J. Hansen writes: "RUE SAINT ANDRE DES ARTS. / 42. Hotel de la Havane (now gone). / Upon his return from a brief bicycling tour in Italy in October 1921, E. E. Cummings took a room at this hotel. Trying to live frugally, Cummings estimated his expenses at $85 dollars a month even though he ate frequently at his favourite restaurant, La Reine Blanche on Boulevard Saint-Germain across from the Cluny. "I eat snails almost daily," he wrote his mother, "oysters biweekly, mussels weekly, mermaids once a month." When he came to Paris in 1924 to divorce Elaine (Thayer) after seven months of marriage, Cummings took a room again at the Havane to wait out the required one month residency. By Christmas he'd returned to the States - a bachelor once again." Full provenance available.
