London: Printed by T R for Jacob Blome and are to be sold by John Williams at the Crown and Joshuah Kirton at the Kings Armes in St Pauls Church-yard; Humphrey Tuckey at the Black Spread-Eagle, 1664. A very good full leather binding, Folio. [20pp.]/pp.402/ [14pp.]/pp.403-448/pp.447-460/pp.37-114/p.443/p.144/[3pp.]/pp.4-36/[14pp.] . + 3 pages of handwritten index inserted at the rear. The 14 page sequence after p. 402 comprises 10 pages all numbered "402" followed by 4 unnumbered pages. Variants include: Q1r has "ancient Books" in fourth line from foot of page; 2F4r has "void," in twelfth line from foot of page. Page signatures: [pi] ]a a b4 B-3E4 3F4, *2, **2, ***2, 3G-3Q 3R3 3S-3T 3V1, k-2e2, 2f1, 3Q1, A-l, 3G-3H2, K L1. Early dark brown calf covered boards. Spine carefully re-backed in matching calf, with 5 raised bands and gilt title. Later marbled endpapers. Bookplate to verso of the front board (designed by Herbert Wauthier): "William Wade Porteous 1924 - - I byde my tyme". Ink signature to front endpaper: "Wm. Wade porteous 23 July 1946. " Postal envelope laid-down to front free-endpaper (with a penny red stamp and post mark dated 1868): J. West Esq. 33 Tufnell, Park Road, Upper Holloway, N." Clean title and text throughout, with good margins. Some heraldic designs are hand-coloured. the pagination is very confused, so apart from the index at the rear I am uncertain of any missing leaves. I have not had the opportunity to compare it to a similar edition - hence the price. Still, a well preserved copy with an interesting provenance.
