Verve, 1960. This rare volume might be graded as GOOD by some; but we will call it ACCEPTABLE. Corner bumps, some flaking and chipping on top edge, tear top spine. A bit of fraying bottom front corner. Pages clean and intact. Spine is solid. This is a very rare book with signs of wear, but still of value. Dessins pour la Bible, Vol. X, Nos. 37-38, Paris, Editions de la Revue VERVE, 1960. The complete set of 24 unsigned lithographs in colors and 23 unsigned lithographs in black, hors-texte, title, text in French, and reproductions, on wove paper, the full sheets, bound (as issued), original boards with unsigned lithograph in colors for the cover. This double number of Verve contains the drawings made by Chagall in 1958 and 1959 on biblical themes which in general he had not dealt with in his illustrations for the Bible reproduced in Verve 33/34. The present work comprises 96 reproductions in black and white and 24 lithographs in color, as well as a cover specially designed for this volume. Lithography in color by Mourlot Frères, Paris. First edition, first printing, of this lavish collection of Chagall's artwork inspired by the Old Testament. In 1930 Chagall set out to produce etchings to illustrate the Bible, at the request of the avant-garde art book publisher Ambroise Vollard. Chagall worked on the project for many years even after Vollard's death in 1939, eventually publishing the artwork in the French art magazine Verve in 1956.
