An Open Letter to President Truman: Ayn Rand Signed Letter during Atlas Shrugged
1951. ONLY ONE! Never Published Ayn Rand Typed Letter SIGNED [TLS] Written at the peak of her intellectual and literary talent, as Ayn Rand was writing Atlas Shrugged in Los Angeles, an undertaking from which she rarely wavered. Unpublished Typed Letter, signed by Ayn Rand. Los Angeles, no date (ca. April or May, 1951). 5 pp. 4to. An unpublished Ayn Rand article addressed to President Harry S. Truman, presumably a draft of a letter she intended to publish, hence her title An Open Letter to President Truman. A few manuscript corrections in Rand's pen; extremely minor wear. In chemise. Mentioned only in a footnote in Gotthelf, Salmieri ("A Companion to Ayn Rand," 2016 p. 393) describing the letter as "never published." Written shortly after Truman's dismissal of General Douglas MacArthur on April 11, 1951, Rand addresses President Truman and then argues against the Korean War in a series of 20 rhetorical questions. Accompanying the letter is the newspaper article in the Los Angeles Examiner, April 12, 1951, containing the complete text of Truman's broadcast to which Ayn Rand responds in her TLS. Rand's underlinings and emphases punctuate the article. Also included is the publicity shot for Warner Bros of Ayn Rand holding a copy of her novel, The Fountainhead. Reprinted nowhere, this is it! The Ultimate Ayn Rand acquisition! Book #C3125. $60,000. From the world's largest collection of rare, signed, and manuscript Ayn Rand in private hands.
