The Book of Mormon, Written by the Hand of Mormon ~ 1888 ~ pub. Orson Pratt
Orson Pratt, 1888. Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy. Here we offer the very early fifth edition of The Book of Mormon: An Account Written by the Hand of Mormon upon plates Taken from the Plates of Nephi, translated by Joseph Smith and published by Orson Pratt for Deseret News Service, Salt Lake City, in 1888. Pratt was an original member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Appearing originally in 1879, Pratt's edition introduced footnotes, new verses, and shorter chapters. Book has been reblocked and rebound with new black bookcloth, acid-free endpapers, and an added placeholding ribbon. The front endpapers bear an uninscribed bookplate. Book is complete from title page--not sure if it originally had a half-title or advertising preface. First few pages are rough with some soiling and edgewear, but the rest of the book is very clean, bright and crisp. The last page of text has a repaired corner and some notations in ballpoint pen on its reverse, blank side(please see pic). Binding is very tight and square. Measures approximately 6.75 x 4.5-inches; 622 pages. This early treasure will make a wonderful centerpiece to your collection or a very thoughtful gift!
