1799. Condition: Buone condizioni. 107750 LOYSEL (Jean-Baptiste). Essai sur l'art de la verrerie. 1799 LOYSEL (Jean-Baptiste). Essai sur l'art de la verrerie. Paris, (s.n.), an VIII. 8vo. 1 leaf. XXVI. 332 pages. 1 folding plate. Contemporary full calf, gilt flat spine (upper joint cracked, head of spine chipped). First Edition of this rare treatise about manufacturing and chemistery by Jean-Baptiste Loysel (1779-1852), a French infrastructure engineer. The work forms a complete and extensively detailed presentation of glass-making methods, from the fabrication of furnaces and crucibles to the choice and use of combustible materials, from the choice of vitrifiable matters to the different fusion methods, and from the making of crystal to the addition of metal oxides to purify or colour the glass. The author gives a deep insight on the description of the discoveries of the chemical processes involved in the glass manufacturing. A student of the very first promotion of the Ecole Polytechnique, who became a deputy at the Convention Nationale then prefect of the Meuse region, Loysel is also the inventor of the "Victory Games", a variant of the Chess game supposedly devised by Napoleon in which players are invited to abrogate the absolutism of their King and to establish a constitutional government.A good copy. Quérard, V, 379.
