Edition Originale de ce recueil de textes par le prêtre et politicien irlandais Arthur O'Leary (1729-1802). Il se fit capucin et reçut l'ordre de la prêtrise à Saint-Malo en Bretagne avant de retourner dans sa ville natale de Cork, puis de devenir aumônier à l'ambassade d'Espagne de Londres, où il finit ses jours. Voix importante dans les débats politico-religieux de son temps, il publia de nombreux essais remarquables d'érudition et de finesse, dont son oeuvre majeure "An Essay on Toleration", plaidoyer pour la liberté de conscience qui parut pour la première fois dans ce recueil. "Soon famous as a preacher, writer, and controversialist he published tracts characterized by learning, religious feeling, toleration, and steadfast allegiance to the Crown. A brilliant wit, he was commonly called the Catholic Swift of Ireland. From 1789 till his death he was chaplain to the Spanish embassy in London, and his society was courted by Burke, Sheridan, Fox, Fitzwilliam, and other leading men of Liberal views" (Catholic Encyclopedia).Rare.
