The first printing of this title was in 1609. This work was printed during the reign of James I. James I was a Protestant monarch who sanctioned harsh measures to control English Catholics following the gunpowder plot. The author of this work, Walsingham, was one of the forty-seven priests banished from England after the Gunpowder Plot. Walsingham entered the English College, Rome, on October 27th 1606 and was ordained a priest on 12 April 1608 and was then sent back to England. However, he entered the Society of Jesus a year later. His pilgrimage was recounted in this work, which was produced with the assistance of Robert Persons, the rector of the English College. He re-entered England on a mission for the Jesuits under the alias of John Fennell and worked in the Leicestershire and Derby districts. ESTC: S119384.
