Gabriel Daniel (1649 - 1728) born in Rouen, was a French Jesuit scholar, author of books on history, philosophy and religion. In this book, called a romance by the translator and sometimes classed as science fiction, he visits the moon and explores the cosmos of rotating vortices hypothesized by Descartes circa 1640, a cosmos recently confirmed by studies of the origins of the solar system, of spiral galaxies, and of accretion disks around black holes. Pere Daniel's efforts are directed to satirising the Cartesian system and theories. See: Voyages in Space by George Locke, page12, No, 006. ESTC R29697.
