The first printing of the second edition was in 1874 and this is a later printing of that edition in 1889. Both are in uniform full calf bindings, with gilt stamping to the spines and boards. Bound by Bickers and Son as indicated by the binder's stamp to the verso of front endpaper. Bookplate to the front pastedowns, dated 1890. Presented to J H Nimmo for Chemistry at Mill Hill School. With the crest for Mill Hill School to the front boards. The 'Descent of Man' was the first of Charles Darwin's works to use the word 'evolution' and this can be found to page 2 of the first volume. It next appeared in Darwin's sixth edition of 'Origin' published in the following year. This work continues on the principles laid out in Darwin's 'On the Origin of Species' which served as an abstract of his theory.
